Adeste Fideles / O Come All Ye Faithful

"O Come, All Ye Faithful," originally known as "Adeste Fideles", is an 18th-century Christmas carol traditionally attributed to John Francis Wade (although some believe the song to be much older and other authors have been proposed). First printed in Wade's 1751 manuscript collection, the hymn began with four Latin verses that were later expanded and widely translated. The now-standard English version comes largely from Frederick Oakeley's 1841 translation, which helped the carol become popular in English-speaking countries.

Lyrics

Verse 1

Adeste fideles,
laeti triumphantes,
venite, venite in Bethlehem.
Natum videte,
Regem angelorum.

Venite, adoremus,
venite, adoremus,
venite, adoremus Dominum.

Verse 2

Deum de Deo,
lumen de Lumine,
gestant puellae viscera;
Deum verum,
genitum, non factum.

Venite, adoremus,
venite, adoremus,
venite, adoremus Dominum.

Verse 3

Cantet nunc “Io”
chorus angelorum;
cantet nunc aula caelestium:
Gloria, gloria
in excelsis Deo.

Venite, adoremus,
venite, adoremus,
venite, adoremus Dominum.

Verse 4

Ergo qui natus
die hodierna,
Jesu, tibi sit gloria;
Patris aeterni
Verbum caro factum.

Venite, adoremus,
venite, adoremus,
venite, adoremus Dominum.

Verse 1

O come, all ye faithful,
joyful and triumphant!
O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem;
come and behold him,
born the King of angels.

O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him, Christ the Lord.

Verse 2

God of God,
Light of Light eternal,
lo! He abhors not the Virgin’s womb;
Son of the Father,
begotten, not created.

O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him, Christ the Lord.

Verse 3

Sing, choirs of angels,
sing in exultation;
sing, all ye citizens of heaven above!
Glory to God,
glory in the highest.

O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him, Christ the Lord.

Verse 4

Yea, Lord, we greet Thee,
born this happy morning;
Jesus, to Thee be all glory given;
Word of the Father,
now in flesh appearing.

O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him, Christ the Lord.

Corde Natus ex Parentis / Of the Father's Love Begotten performed by Neumes and Tunes

Lyrics

Verse 1

Corde natus ex Parentis
ante mundi exordium,
alpha et O cognominatus,
ipse fons et clausula
omnium quae sunt, fuerunt,
quaeque post futura sunt.

Verse 2

Ipse iussit, et creata,
dixit ipse, et facta sunt:
terra, caelum, fossa ponti,
trina rerum machina,
quaeque in his viget sub alto
solis et lunae globo.

Verse 3

Corporis formam caduci,
membrorumque gestiens,
imbecillitatem nostram
mente dignatus miser,
non reliquit exsulem
deus homo nostram domum.

Verse 4

Hic est ille, quem prophetae
canis cecinerunt sacris,
quem promissi olim Patris
vera mundi gaudia,
salus atque redemptio
gentium expectata est.

Verse 1

Of the Father's love begotten,
ere the worlds began to be,
He is Alpha and Omega,
He the source, the ending He,
of the things that are, that have been,
and that future years shall see.

Verse 2

At His word the worlds were framèd;
He commanded; it was done:
Heaven and earth and depths of ocean
in their three-fold order one;
all that grows beneath the shining
of the moon and burning sun.

Verse 3

O that birth for ever blessèd,
when the Virgin, full of grace,
by the Holy Ghost conceiving,
bare the Saviour of our race,
and the Babe, the world's Redeemer,
first revealed His sacred face.

Verse 4

This is He whom seers in old time
chanting sang with one accord,
whom the voices of the prophets
promised in their faithful word;
now He shines, the long-expected;
let creation praise its Lord.
